DK / London reviews / Jazz Diva Seduces...

The Jazz Diva Seduces with Her Perfect Performance
by Ivan Hewett
Telegraph (UK)
October 30, 2009

It's taken barely a decade for Diana Krall to transform herself from the quietly intense chanteuse playing little venues like Pizza Express to jazz's one and only diva, able to fill the Albert Hall for three nights at a stretch. What's changed? In essence, nothing at all. It's just that the record business has discovered Krall's genius for making her audience feel secure. She draws people into an intimate space, not to alarm or move them with songs about real emotional depths, or to share anything really personal.

It's simply to enjoy that feeling of being 'up close and personal'. That feeling is augmented by the between-songs chat, where Krall tells stories about taking the kids to the park, and her new-found happiness with husband Elvis Costello. She roams around the Great American Songbook, but never very far. All the songs she bought out for us were copper-bottomed hits, already engraved in our memories by singers like Nat King Cole (it's no accident his voice was piped into the hall as we entered, just in case there was any doubt what we were in for).

The other factor that makes us sit back with a sigh and simply enjoy is that Krall really is very good. She has an eye for good collaborators, and in bassist Robert Hurst, drummer Kareem Wiggins and guitarist Anthony Wilson she had the perfect quartet. The little moments of interplay between Wilson's soft-toned guitar sound and Krall's agile right hand at the piano were like the dash of bitters in the perfect cocktail.

As for Krall herself, she has that cast-iron technique which marks the real star. She took "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" at a pace which could have turned the words into a gabble, but she made it seem easy. Meanwhile the alert concentration of her piano-playing never slipped for a second. Krall is in truth more remarkable as a piano-player than a singer. She plays engagingly with the shape of phrase in a way she hardly allows herself as a singer, and often her musing piano intros (such as the one to Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You") were more affecting than the songs themselves. Right at the end, as if to confound her critics, she gave a rendition of Lerner and Loewe's "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face" (changed from the original as an offering to her husband) which really did touch the depths.
Krall Chortles and Fingerclicks Her Way Back to Where She Belongs

London Guardian,
October 30, 2009

If the audience at the first show of Canadian diva Diana Krall's three-night London run came expecting a faithful copy of the pillow-talk music from her current album Quiet Nights, they didn't get it. But, judging by the cheers, they certainly didn't seem disappointed. Krall had chosen instead to roll through an upbeat two-hour jazz set, sounding as if she couldn't imagine anything more pleasurable than spending an evening around the piano with 5,000 strangers. There were fewer pin-drop moments and rather more amiably rambling family anecdotes than usual -- but also a lot more piano-playing and jazz quotes. So the hardliners (including me) who believe she long ago abandoned her roots for the easy-listening market had, on this occasion, to back off.

Late in the show, Krall and her guitarist Anthony Wilson even left the smoochy script of Boy from Ipanema to veer into Count Basie's cannily swinging Jive at Five. She let out a chortle of delight as Wilson caught her drift. This typified the whole gig. Wilson, bassist Robert Hurst, and particularly drummer (and sometime hip-hop producer) Karriem Riggins brought a changed attack to the Krall road-band. It would be hard to imagine Riggins's roaring percussion engine purring quietly through a low-lights set.

Krall snapped her fingers into a flying tempo on I Love Being Here With You, to which Wilson initially seemed to be clinging by his fingernails. Let's Fall in Love and I've Grown Accustomed to His Face indicated that the singer's languid timing and swooping note-bends are now often augmented by an increasingly cavalier (almost Van Morrison-like) distortion of the way words sound. So Nice was a cool Latin swinger, and Nat King Cole's The Frim Fram Sauce had a breezy Fats Waller piano intro and a superb double-time bass break.

Krall arrived at Walk On By via a fragile piano medley of Bacharach themes before turning the softly stepping song into a defiantly soulful anthem. She filled the room with the quietest confidences and almost sax-like exhalations of air on delicate accounts of Joni Mitchell's I Could Drink a Case of You and Jobim's Quiet Nights. The encore was Departure Bay, a tribute to Krall's late mother, written with her husband Elvis Costello. It brought the show back to the muted territory Diana Krall more usually occupies -- but the contrasts of the evening seemed only to heighten its haunting eloquence.

Gene Bertoncini @ Jazz Standard, Nov 5

Thursday, November 5, don't miss the Gene Bertoncini Trio @ THE JAZZ STANDARD (116 E. 27th St., btw Park & Lex)

Gene Bertoncini – guitar
Sean Smith – bass
Rich DeRosa – drums

Back in March, jazz guitar great Gene Bertoncini left our audience spellbound when he performed with a string quartet. My dear friend Gene plays solo acoustic on most of his local gigs, but for this special one-nighter “the Segovia of jazz” has recruited the sensitive and swinging rhythm section of bassist Sean Smith and drummer Rich DeRosa. One of the pre-eminent jazz guitarists on the scene today, Gene Bertoncini has gigged and/or recorded with instrumentalists ranging from Benny Goodman to Wayne Shorter, as well as with Hubert Laws, Michel Legrand, Lalo Schifrin, Paul Desmond, Ronnie Foster, Luiz Bonfá, Edson Machado and Michael Moore, and with such superstar singers as Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, and Nancy Wilson.

Diana Krall: three concerts in London

After a week-off to rest, Diana Krall resumes the European leg of her "Quiet Nights World Tour" with three concerts at the Royal Albert Hall from October 28 to 30, at 7:30pm. Actually, "only" two concerts were planned, but a third one was requested to October 30 due to exceptional public demand.
Special opening act: saxophonist YolanDa Brown!
Tix: £37.50 - £75.00

The Royal Albert Hall was built to fulfil the vision of Prince Albert (Queen Victoria's consort) of a 'Central Hall' that would be used to promote understanding and appreciation of the Arts and Sciences and would stand at the heart of the South Kensington estate, surrounded by museums and places of learning.
The Hall is a Grade I Listed building; and has been in continuous use since it was opened in March 1871. It was always conceived as a multipurpose building to host not only concerts of music but exhibitions, public meetings, scientific conversations and award ceremonies. It is a registered charity held in trust for the nation but is financially self sufficient: it receives no funding from central or local government.

Obama: "We need to hear from you"

"Dear Arnaldo:

Our records show that you live in California's 30th district, and I noticed that you haven't yet voted in our Health Reform Video Challenge. Votes are pouring in, but we need to hear from everyone about which ad we should run on television nationally.

Can you rate the videos now? http://my.barackobama.com/VideoChallenge

Thanks,

Mitch"

P.S. -- Here's Natalie's email from earlier this week, further explaining the challenge:

Original Message
From: Natalie Foster, BarackObama.com
Subject: Top 20 videos: Watch and vote

Friend--We just finished going through the submissions to OFA's Health Reform Video Challenge, and they're great. There are personal stories that grab your heart, brilliant summaries of what reform would really mean, and plenty of biting satire that calls out the insurance lobbyists.

Out of nearly a thousand excellent videos submitted, we're down to the top 20. Now it's your turn to watch the finalists and vote for your favorites -- and then we'll air the winner on national television.Watch and vote on the finalists now.

The top 20 ads will also be voted on by our panel of experts and artists, including Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am, animator and director Seth MacFarlane, actress Kate Walsh, Obama for America campaign manager David Plouffe, and Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine. It couldn't be more urgent for us to get these funny, powerful, and eye-opening messages out to the public. As the full Congress begins its final debate on reform, airing the winning video as an ad on national television could help tip the balance toward enacting the changes they've been talking about for years in Washington.

Polls close at midnight on Friday, November 6th, so don't waste a minute: Watch the finalists and vote for your favorites right away:

Thanks, and go get started,
Natalie Foster - New Media Director

P.S. -- Help spread the word: After you vote, make sure you send this on to friends and family so they can check out the finalists. http://my.barackobama.com/page/m/55c10318/6bac30d3/d7b07c28/1188622c/3077766480/VEsD/

R.I.P.: Alberto Luiz Farah

(born February 12, 1948, Niterói, RJ, Brazil;
died October 27, 2009, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil)

The first time I became acquainted with Alberto Farah's talent was through a Victor Assis Brasil album recorded live on September 2, 1974, at the "Teatro da Galeria" in Rio de Janeiro. Victor's quintet at that time was formed by Farah (playing Fender Rhodes on this concert), Paulo Russo (then on electric bass), Lula Nascimento (drums) and Marcio Montarroyos (trumpet). Besides a haunting version of Leonard Bernstein's "Somewhere," it features three excellent tunes by Victor: "Pro Zeca," "Puzzle" and "Waving". The original LP, with liner notes by Elis Regina, came out on Magic Music, a subsidiary label of CID Records. It was later reissued on CD with a terrible cover art.

Alberto Farah by himself, from his bio on MySpace.

"I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in February 1948. At 7 years old I've started my music studies, taking music theory and violin lessons. Some years later I've also started my piano studies in the Governamental school "Instituto Villa-Lobos in Rio de Janeiro". I've had a classical music formation and after some years playing violin and piano in concerts,I ingressed at the Pro-arte School to study contemporary classical composition with Professor Guerra Peixe, brilliant Brazilian composer and master. After some time I was seduced by popular music and jazz.
I've joined the Victor Assis Brazil band ,and participated in a fabulous album with that band in 1972.Victor died shortly after. Since then I've been playing with most of outstanding brazilian musicans as Paulo Moura,Paulo Russo,Carlos Malta , Marcio Montarroyos and so many others. I've also started with cd production and arranging for many brazilian artists as Elza Soares,Cecília Leite,Bruno Batista,Marcio Montserrat and others as well as composing many sound tracks for television in Brazil.
My passion in playing my piano and composing. I'm an active professional musician and producer in Rio de Janeiro. I perform very often with musician and singers locally. I have written many musical pieces for orchestra and piano(Classical). At present I've formed togetherwith Trumpeter/Producer Mike Ryan a new band called "Rio Fusion Orchestra", and produce various soundtracks for media companies in Brazil and abroad."

CD of the Day - "Hot Club Cool Yule"

CD of the Day
Hot Club of San Francisco: "Cool Yule" (Azica) 2009

One of the best jazz Christmas albums to come along in many years. A perfect combination of unpredictable arrangements, gorgeous performances and lovely tunes, besides a great sonic quality. Highlights: "I'll Be Home for Christmas," "Sugar Rum Cherry," "I Wonder as I Wander" and "The Christmas Song."
*****
Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli never recorded an album of holiday music, but the Hot Club of San Francisco -- who've long been inspired by those gypsy-jazz pioneers -- always wished they had. "What Would Django Do?," the Hot Club's guiding principle, led happily in this case to the creation of "Hot Club Cool Yule." It's the 12th album in the San Francisco quintet's 20-year career and their second for Azica Records, who'll release the CD today, October 27, in the USA.

"We'd been considering a holiday CD for years," says the group's founder and lead guitarist Paul Mehling, "but we didn't want to just throw one out there. Now, with the birth of [violinist] Evan [Price]'s daughter in August -- which was imminent during the entire production of this CD -- we felt more connected to childhood and the holiday spirit than ever. We're also at an all-time high with musicianship in the band now. After 20 years we've really got a dream team, so we had to go for it now."

With inventive arrangements by Price and Mehling, the quintet essays a range of material and moods from cheeky to tender to ecstatically swinging. Steve Allen's "Cool Yule," which was a hit for Louis Armstrong, leads off the proceedings; holiday standards ("I'll Be Home for Christmas," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Auld Lang Syne") are included along with vividly reimagined chestnuts (a habañera-style "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" aka "Don Rodolfo," and a "twisted up" "Jingle Bells" dubbed "Djingle Bells"). The jazz waltz medley of "Carol of the Bells" and Vince Guaraldi's "Skating" is a particular highlight.

The Hot Club's previous Azica album, released in January of this year, was "Bohemian Maestro: Django Reinhardt and the Impressionists," which one reviewer described as a "light-filled celebration of the French-gypsy guitar genius Django Reinhardt, French Impressionism, and the kinship between music and painting." Strings magazine called it "one of the group's best. As usual, the HCSF forgoes flash in favor of soulful substance." And Stereophile praised the band's "lush forest of textures, often replicating the dynamics and sound of the Django-Grappelli partnership. . . . [Bohemian Maestro] is a consistent disc that has the feel of a set piece concert: all very well-done and, happily, very well recorded."

The current edition of the Hot Club of San Francisco, heard on both "Bohemian Maestro" and "Cool Yule," has been together for six years, anchored by Paul Mehling and two-time Grammy-winning violinist Evan Price (a ten-year veteran of the Turtle Island String Quartet) and also including Jeff Magidson and Jason Vanderford on twin rhythm guitars and bassist Clint Baker.

The HCSF tours regularly, sometimes presenting "Silent Surrealism," an evening of silent films by directors such as Charlie Bowers, accompanied by gypsy jazz. Upcoming dates include: 11/19 Savannah, GA; 11/21 Kill Devil Hills, NC; and 11/22 Washington, DC.

"Cool Yule" release gigs include the following: 12/1-2 San Miguel de Allende (Mexico) Festival de Jazz; 12/4 Plaza Bistro, Sonoma, CA; 12/5 Palms Playhouse, Winters, CA; 12/6 Majestic Theatre, Benicia, CA; 12/11 Armando's, Martinez, CA; 12/13 Black Box Theatre, San Jose; 12/16 Hotel Rex, San Francisco; 12/19 Jazzschool, Berkeley; 12/20 Rancho Nicasio, Nicasio, CA; 12/22 Yoshi's, Oakland; 12/23 Throckmorton Theater, Mill Valley, CA. The band will be celebrating New Year's Eve at a concert at the American Theater in Hampton, VA, on 12/31.

Sony Holland live @ Catalina, Oct 28

Acclaimed jazz vocalist Sony Holland, who recently relocated to Los Angeles, will be performing at the Catalina Jazz Bar (aka Catalina Bar & Grill) this next Wednesday, October 28, backed by Theo Saunders (piano), Tony Austin (drums), Steve Cotter (guitar), and the legendary John B. Williams, who has worked with everyone on the jazz scene - from Louis Armstrong, Horace Silver and Dizzy Gillespie to Airto Moreira, Jon Hendricks, Johnny Hammond and, most recently, Natalie Cole.

"I am new to LA, so it is really nice to get to know people on the local music scene, which
is FANTASTIC. The musicians and singers are so talented here," Holland says. Raised in Minnesota, she lived in Nashville during the '90s, moved to San Francisco six years ago (where she built a cult-following among Bay Area jazz fans), and now she is in Los Angeles.

About her bassist on this gig, the one and only John B. Williams, she states: "I have seen him play with Nancy Wilson several times as she is one of my favorite singers, so I'm excited to be working with him." Btw, Sony has been compared to Nancy as well as to June Christy and Peggy Lee. It's easy to notice an influence of Tony Benett too. "Sony Holland has a warm deep voice and a very clear tone. One can always understand the words she is singing yet she is not shy to improvise," the renowned jazz writer Scott Yanow once wrote.

"Repertoire for my show will be a wide mix. Like many singers I am including more contemporary songs into my show along with the standards," she tells us. "So along with songs by Harry Warren, Johnny Mercer and Duke Ellington, there will also be songs by Rufus Wainwright ("Sansoucci"), Bob Dylan ("All I Really Want to Do"), and even a jazz/reggae version of a song by Carla Bruni & William Yeats, "Those Dancing Days Are Gone." Also, I sing
a few wonderful original songs written by my husband Jerry Holland (originally from New York City) though he has written a #1 Billboard Country song" ("Friends,” recorded by John Michael Montgomery.) Hope she will also include Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" (the theme song of my jazz radio show at TUPI-FM during the 80s, in a recording by Roland Hanna) and Jobim's "Meditation" on the setlist.

I've seen dozens of great performances on the Catalina (owned by Catalina Popescu) and it's definitely one of the best jazz venues not only in California, but in all the USA, with a lovely vibe, beautiful ambiance, great food and a top-class wine list. I strongly recommed the Mediterranean Salmon (filet of salmon grilled and served with rice, vegetables, tomato, olive oil, garlic and pine nuts sauce) with a Pinot Noir Santa Rosa, and the Scampi Plate (shrimps sautéed with white wine, butter, garlic, capers & lemon, served with rice and vegetables) with a Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio.

ps: One of my all-time favorite drummers, Steve Gadd will be at the Catalina next month, leading the Gadd & Friends band (Joey DeFrancesco, Ronnie Cuber and Paul Bollenback) from November 10 to 12th.

"It's a real mission to get all the stuff organized for a Playboy Mansion Halloween party. The last two day we have been running around trying to get the last bits and pieces together, changing costumes etc. But its fun! Think Im pretty satisfied with what I got now, even though its barely nothing hehe!" says my dear friend Natalie Anderson, who's in LA since two weeks ago. She will be one of brightest stars of this evening!
"Im going to be a black angel, black underwear, huge black wings, lace gloves and some golden stilettos.... How you like that huh!? ;) Tried to starve myself a little as well the last couple of days so I should look skinny in my "barely not existing" outfit, but f** that... Didn't work very well, still got my cuuurves, so I might as well be friendly with them :) Need to start my mission to get ready now, will grab some food first (I know... But what the f**). Then I'm on it baby!"

Happy Halloween!

CD of the Day - "George Benson: Tell It Like It Is"

CD of the Day
George Benson: "Tell It Like It Is" (Verve Originals) 2008
Supervised by Harry Weinger & mastered by Kevin Reeves, this new reissue of "Tell It Like It Is" sounds much better than all other six previous CD issues that came out during the 80s and 90s. It's also the first one on digipak format, with art director Hollis King preserving the original cover & liner photos (by Pete Turner) as well as all the credits and the album design by my idol Sam Antupit.
The last Benson album during the A&M/CTI era, before Creed signed him once again for the then-new indepedent CTI, "Tell it like it is” is only 33 minutes long. Recorded in April & May 1969 (at Van Gelder Studios, of course) it's the more r&b-oriented project that the guitarist ever cut for Creed Taylor. It's also his only collaboration with arranger Marty Sheller, famous for his long association with Mongo Santamaria. So, don't be surprised by some latin elements infused on the heavy scores.
The supporting cast features keyboardists Rodgers Grant & Richard Tee, electric bassists Bob Bushnell & Jerry Jemmott (grafado Gerry), drummer Leo Morris (aka Idris Muhammad), percussionists Angel Allende & Johnny Pacheco, plus reedmen Joe Farrell, Sonny Fortune, Bob Porcelli (alto sax-alto solo on the opener, “Soul limbo”), Hubert Laws, Lew Soloff, Jerry Dodgion & Jerome Richradson.
The program ranges from Fats Domino (“Land of 1000 dances”) to Eumir Deodato (“Jackie, All” - dedicated to singer Jackie Cain of Jackie & Roy fame), also including Stevie Wonder (“My cherie amour”). Benson sings on three cuts: “My woman’s good to me,” “Out in the cold again” and the title track, Aaron Neville's soul-hit "Tell It Like It Is."

Obama: Off the hook

Dear Arnaldo:

Our records show that you are now located in California's 30th congressional district.

I know you've gotten a lot of messages from us recently, and everyone here at OFA headquarters is pretty tired. But the last reports of calls and commitments are just coming in from events on the West Coast, and I wanted to share the news with you.

As you know, we set a big goal: 100,000 calls to Congress placed or committed to in a single day by OFA supporters and allied organizations. By 2:30 p.m., you had crushed it. So, we gulped and said let's go for 200,000, not knowing what would happen. But the calls just kept pouring in -- keeping phones ringing off the hook in congressional offices in D.C. and your representatives' district offices around the country.

Then, OFA supporters gathered in over 1,000 living rooms and community centers from Macon, Georgia to Missoula, Montana. You called hundreds of thousands of key voters in your community and got them to agree to call Congress and speak out for reform, too. President Obama joined in at a call party in New York -- and he had some amazing words of support for the folks like you who make this movement possible.I'm looking at the numbers, and with almost all of the reports now in, the tally wasn't 200,000 calls placed or pledged -- it was 315,023. You did it.

Take a moment to watch the President's inspiring words to OFA volunteers on this incredible day.

Your voice was overwhelming -- with reports in the media of congressional offices "completely crushed with calls." CBS News described your effort as an "onslaught." And a congressional aide was quoted with a common response, saying their office was deluged by "pretty much non-stop health care calls from OFA."You set a new OFA record, you caught the national media's attention, and you certainly put Congress on notice. But you know that's not what really matters.

The message I sent earlier talked about a woman, Jenny U., whose insurance company cut off her coverage because they decided her kidney donation to her sick daughter counted as a "pre-existing condition." What really matters is that today you brought America one giant, irreversible step closer to being a place where no one will ever have to suffer that kind of injustice again. That's what all the messages, late nights, and phone calls ultimately add up to.

It's what makes everything we do together worthwhile -- and it's why we'll keep fighting together until the job is done.

Watch President Obama's special message to you from a call party in New York:http://my.barackobama.com/TTDreport

Thank you, so much, for being part of the team.

Sincerely,
Mitch Stewart
Director - Organizing for America

P.S. -- Here are just a few stories from "Time to Deliver" events across the country:
This evening I and three other volunteers got together and made calls. As I was calling, one of the women I spoke with told me that she was inspired by my story -- shared in the email earlier that day -- to get her entire family to call Congress. She didn't know it was me on the phone, but she said she just couldn't stop saying "this isn't right" when she heard my story. It gave me so much hope -- during the evening we made 213 calls and got 64 commitments to call tomorrow.-Jenny U., Missouri VolunteerSeeing the tally go up, hearing voter after voter agree to call, and listening to the real excitement people have about finally fixing this broken system, I was reminded why we do this. Each of us can only give so much -- but when we all do it together, we move mountains. Health insurance reform, here we come.-Sean Knox, California New Media DirectorI want to recognize the folks in this room -- and folks watching online -- who are helping us to do exactly that. And I want to thank all the Organizing for America volunteers for making calls, knocking on doors, and keeping up the fight. You know why this is so important. ... We are nearing the finish line -- and with your help, we're going to cross it. -President Barack Obama

100,000 calls to Congress

"Dear Arnaldo:

Our records show that you live in California's 23rd district.

Jenny U. from Missouri did what any parent would: When her son needed a kidney, she donated one of hers. But she didn't realize insurance companies would use her kindness as an excuse to never cover her again, calling her donation a "pre-existing condition."

Now, insurance companies are spending millions on a campaign of lies to kill health reform that would help folks like Jenny. So, today, with crucial negotiations taking place in Congress, we're raising our voices and making it clear: It's time to deliver on reform.

We've set a big goal: 100,000 calls to Congress made or committed to in a single day. To hit it, we'll need your help -- will you take 3 minutes to call Congress now?

Call your representatives and tell them: It's Time to Deliver on health reform.

According to our records, you live in California's 23rd congressional district.
Please call:
Sen. Dianne Feinstein at 202-224-3841
Sen. Barbara Boxer at 202-224-3553
Rep. Lois Capps at 202-225-3601
(Not your representatives? Click here to look yours up.)

Health insurance reform is finally ready for consideration by the full Congress, and hundreds of insurance company lobbyists on Capitol Hill are working overtime to kill it. Calling is quick and easy, but effective -- and your voice has tremendous power at this critical moment.

After you make your call, tell the staffer who picks up where you live and that you're counting on Congress to deliver on health reform. Let them know that Americans like you support the President's plan -- and that if your representatives are working to pass it, they have your thanks.

If we hit 100,000 calls made or committed to, we'll send an unmistakable signal that this time, families must come before insurance companies. We'll be tracking progress toward our goal publicly -- make sure to report your call back to us so we can count it: http://my.barackobama.com/CallTTD

Thank you,

Sonny Rollins to Perform Benefit Concert for Clearwater

Tenor sax titan Sonny Rollins and his band will perform a special benefit concert for Hudson River Sloop Clearwater on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at the Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, NY. The concert will begin at 2:00 pm.

Rollins's performance in Tarrytown on behalf of Pete Seeger's Clearwater will mark the first time the renowned environmental organization has ever hosted a benefit concert dedicated solely to jazz, and is also the first time that the saxophonist has performed a fund-raiser for any cause. The concert, to be presented by Jazz Forum Arts, is Rollins's only 2009 New York area appearance.

Performing with Sonny Rollins will be his working band: Clifton Anderson, trombone; Bobby Broom, guitar; Bob Cranshaw, bass; Kobie Watkins, drums; and Victor See-Yuen, percussion. Tickets for the concert range from $75 to $100; a limited number of premium tickets (which include a reception with Rollins) are also available. For information and ticket purchases, visit www.tarrytownmusichall.org or call 877-840-0457. The theater is located at 13 Main Street, Tarrytown.

In 1998 Sonny Rollins, for years an ardent environmentalist, released an album called "Global Warming," which included songs such as "Echo-Side Blue," "Mother Nature's Blues," "Clear-Cut Boogie," and the title track, which he frequently performs to this day. The CD package contained a poem by Rollins, reading in part: "We got to stop assumin' / We can just go on consumin' ... Live light on the planet, sister and brother / 'Cause if we kill it, there ain't no other / Not that much time left neither."

"My views have changed a little bit since then," says Rollins. "I still agree that people should be more aware of the environment and their own personal habits -- like throwing stuff out of the window. Overall I see the environmental crisis less as 'us versus them' and more as part of the big picture. It's okay in a way. But people still have to take action. It doesn't affect what we should be doing. It's more of a moral question. Being against the environment is being against yourself and your neighbor."

Rollins has resided since 1972 in an old farmhouse in Columbia County, New York, in the Hudson River Valley. He eagerly accepted the opportunity to lend his talents for an organization founded in 1969 by another Hudson Valley musical icon and environmentalist. "Pete Seeger and I have the same heroes and beliefs," says Rollins. "We are in the same family. He is my brother."

Presently in the midst of an eight-city European tour -- which takes in Groningen, Toulouse, Paris, Milan, Zagreb, Salzburg, Rome, and London -- Rollins is also scheduled to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC on 12/2. While in Salzburg (11/8), he will be awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class. The award is one of Austria's highest honors, given to leading international figures for distinguished achievements. The only other American artists who have received this recognition are Frank Sinatra and Jessye Norman.

In other news, a Sonny Rollins iPhone App (http://www.tinyurl.com/sonnyrollinsapp) has just been launched. The app, developed by Rollins's video producer and webmaster Bret Primack,is a mini-website where users can access Sonny's music, videos, and concerts tickets. "Once the free App is downloaded from iTunes," says Primack, "it's very easy to sample and purchase the music, from any location."

Sonny Rollins news is also posted on Twitter (www.twitter.com/theodorerollins).

Rollins's web site has been offering special packages on MP3s, lead sheets, and solo transcriptions for all of the songs on his two Doxy CDs, "Road Shows, Vol. 1" and "Sonny, Please" - the first time an artist's web site and label have made such packages available.

Finally, Sonny is looking ahead to his next recording, which will be a studio date and "will probably not be with my working group," he says. "Maybe a trio." He intends to release the CD in the summer or fall of 2010, in conjunction with a special New York concert around his September 7 birthday.

Mike Longo Big Band live in NY tonight

Join us at Jazz Tuesdays tonight October 20 for a very exciting evening to celebrate Dizzy Gillespie's 92nd birthday with Mike Longo's swinging 17-piece Big Band, "The NY State of the Art Jazz Ensemble" with legendary jazz vocalist Annie Ross, trumpeter Jimmy Owens, and hot young vocalist Hilary Gardner, PLUS archival film footage of Dizzy performing in his prime. Jazz Tuesdays is located at the John Birks Gillespie within the New York City Bahá'í Center at 53 East 11th Street (between University Place & Broadway). For tickets and information call 212-222-5159. TONIGHT ONLY THERE WILL BE ONE SHOW AT 8:00 P.M.

Pianist/composer/arranger Mike Longo, who has earned many accolades as a jazz pianist, formed the New York State of the Art Jazz Ensemble in 1999 to play the Jersey Jazz Festival when they wanted to feature him in a setting of composer/arranger. The program was received so enthusiastically that Mike was prompted by jazz fans and the members of the band to keep it going. As a result, he began composing new material and arranging it for the band, which was booked back each year at the Jersey Festival, followed by several appearances at New York City's famed Birdland jazz club. Their latest CD, “Oasis”, released last winter climbed to #7 and remained on the charts for an unprecedented 20 weeks. We are proud to present this fabulous group of musicians, featuring Hilary Gardner

Annie Ross moved with her aunt, singer Ella Logan, to Los Angeles at the age of three, where she became a juvenile film actress, starting on the "Our Gang" series at five. As a teenager, she moved to New York to study acting, then back to England, where she became a nightclub and band singer. She returned to the U.S. and gained attention in 1952 for her song "Twisted," a "vocalese" setting of humorous lyrics to what had been a saxophone solo by Wardell Gray. (More than 20 years later, Joni Mitchell made a popular recording of the song.) In 1958, Ross teamed with Dave Lambert and Jon Hendricks in the vocalese trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, and they toured and recorded successfully, their best-known album being their first, "Sing a Song of Basie." Ross left the trio in 1962 and settled in England, continuing to sing and work as an actress. She returned again to the U.S. in 1985. In 1993, she had a featured role in the Robert Altman film "Short Cuts."

Jimmy Owens, a fine hard bop soloist, started on the trumpet when he was ten and later studied with Donald Byrd. Owens has played as a sideman with many major players, including Lionel Hampton, Hank Crawford, Charles Mingus, Herbie Mann, Duke Ellington, Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, and the Dizzy Gillespie Reunion Band. He was one of the founders of the Collective Black Artists and closely involved with the Jazzmobile in New York.
