The Best Jazz of 2009

Os melhores do jazz em 2009 - The Best Jazz of 2009!
The 31st Annual Jazz Station Poll results by Brazil-born jazz historian & jazz educator Arnaldo DeSouteiro

"Bossa Nova Guitar" @ Dusty Groove

Jazz Club -- Bossa Nova Guitar

Produced by Arnaldo DeSouteiro for Verve (JazzClub series)
CD Item 486954

http://www.dustygroove.com/browse.php?kwfilter=Bossa+Nova+Guitar&incl_oos=1&incl_cs=1&x=16&y=8

Brilliant bossa all the way through -- and a lovely illustration of the importance of the guitar in Brazilian music! The set brings together 50s work from a host of different sources -- American bossa jazz, originals from Rio, and even some key tracks from overseas -- all working together beautifully in a package that manages to hit more than enough bases to provide an overview of the genre while still keeping things fresh! Titles include "Bim Bom" by Charlie Byrd, "Corcovado" by Gabor Szabo, "Minha Saudade" by Rosinha De Valenca, "Coisa Numero Um" by Bola Sete, "Meditacao" by Joe Pass, "Insensatez" by Wes Montgomery, "Canto De Ossanha" by Baden Powell, "Simple Samba" by Jim Hall, "Outra Vez" by Stan Getz & Laurindo Almeida, "Jackie All" by George Benson, "Batidinha" by Antonio Carlos Jobim, "Samba De Orfeu" by Luis Bonfa, and "Um Abraco No Bonfa" by Joao Gilberto.

Elaine Miles live @ Steamers tonite, Dec 23

Tonight, December 23
8P-MID, NO COVER
ELAINE MILES
Steamers Jazz Club and Cafe
138 W. Commonwealth Ave
Fullerton, CA 92832
Ph: (714) 871-8800

Growing up in Connecticut and Iowa, Laguna Beach resident Elaine Miles absorbed the music heard on her parents' records: popular stylists such as Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. She also fell in love with Hank Williams and the classic country music played by her uncle. She had a "weakness for the sad stuff, no matter what genre," she says now. These days, the sultry, deep-voiced Miles tackles everything from Cole Porter chestnuts and Sting's "Fragile" to songs never designed to be vocalized, like some challenging Thelonious Monk material. "I'll be working on the two loves of my childhood-jazz and country," she says. "The moments in between will be spent making the trouble I'll write about in my songs." Check it out!

Obama: "Where we stand"

"December 21, 2009

Dear Arnaldo:

Our records show that you live in California's 30th congressional district.

Early this morning, the Senate made history and health reform cleared its most important hurdle yet -- garnering the 60 votes needed to move toward a final vote in that chamber later this week.

This marks the first time in our nation's history that comprehensive health reform has come to this point. And it appears that the American people will soon realize the genuine reform that offers security to those who have health insurance and affordable options to those who do not.

I'm grateful to Senator Harry Reid and every senator who's been working around the clock to make this happen. And I'm grateful to you, and every member of the Organizing for America community, for all the work you have done to make this progress possible.

After a nearly century-long struggle, we are now on the cusp of making health insurance reform a reality in the United States of America.

As with any legislation, compromise is part of the process. But I'm pleased that recently added provisions have made this landmark bill even stronger. Between the time when the bill passes and the time when the insurance exchanges get up and running, insurance companies that try to jack up their rates do so at their own peril. Those who hike their prices may be barred from selling plans on the exchanges.

And while insurance companies will be prevented from denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing conditions once the exchanges are open, in the meantime there will be a high-risk pool where people with pre-existing conditions can purchase affordable coverage.

A recent amendment has made these protections even stronger. Insurance companies will now be prohibited from denying coverage to children immediately after this bill passes. There's also explicit language in this bill that will protect a patient's choice of doctor. And small businesses will get additional assistance as well.

These protections are in addition to the ones we've been talking about for some time. No longer will insurance companies be able to drop your coverage if you become sick and no longer will you have to pay unlimited amounts out of your own pocket for treatments that you need.

Under this bill families will save on their premiums; businesses that would see their costs rise if we don't act will save money now and in the future. This bill will strengthen Medicare and extend the life of the program. Because it's paid for and gets rid of waste and inefficiency in our health care system, this will be the largest deficit reduction plan in over a decade.

Finally, this reform will extend coverage to more than 30 million Americans who don't have it.

These are not small changes. These are big changes. They're fundamental reforms. They will save money. They will save lives.

And your passion, your work, your organizing helped make all of this possible. Now it's time to finish the job.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama"

The Jennifer York Quartet @ Steamers, Dec 26

Next Friday, December 26, 8:30P-1A, $8
THE JENNIFER YORK QUARTET

Steamers Jazz Club and Cafe
138 W. Commonwealth Ave
Fullerton, CA 92832
Ph: 714-871-8800

Returning to Steamers is jazz bassist Jennifer York, with Carol Chaikin on reeds, Alexandra Caselli on piano, and Suzanne Morissette on drums. The quartet comes to celebrate the release of its new CD, "Transitions" which features original songs by the four talented women. Four years in the making, the new album can be purchased for the first time at Steamers this week, or on Jennifer's website at www.jenniferyork.com. The band has been together for twelve years. Its first album, "A Tribute To Friends", features a variety of artists: Eric Marienthal, Alex Acuna and Justo Almario to name a few.

"Transitions" features just the quartet and is the first recording to be made since Chaikin joined the band. York's dual careers as a popular local broadcaster and well-know jazz musician would seem to have little in common, but the California native has long insisted that she "can't imagine life, one without the other... I love both my careers." Growing up in Hemet, she won numerous awards as Outstanding Bassist at jazz festivals attended with the Hemet High School Jazz Ensemble. She majored in political science at UCLA, eventually getting an internship in New York with "Good Morning America" which turned into a full time job. After eight years with no musical involvement, she moved back to Los Angeles.

She enrolled at the Musician's Institute in North Hollywood and landed a gig playing bass at Disneyland. When that job ended, she returned to broadcasting part-time as a traffic report for KFWB, and started the all-women Christian rock band, "Rachel Rachel", making two albums with that group on Word Records. In 1992, she left the group and began to fly for KTLA, simultaneously beginning to study with famed bassists John Clayton and Chris Hanulick, who is principal bassist for the L.A. Philharmonic. For the past eight years she has performed with the all-women big band, Maiden Voyage, the jazz quintet "The Jazzbirds", and has guest performed with John Tesh. She currently focuses much of her energy on writing for and promoting her York Trio.

In January, 2002, Clayton was chosen to play with the Grammy High School Big Band comprised of high school students selected from the entire United States, and was presented with the "Level 1" Award by the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts. Most recently, he was named Presidential Scholar in the Arts, and in June 2002, he performed at Steinway Hall in New York City where he received a scholarship from the Music for Youth Foundation. R.I.P.: Juquinha Stockler

Born João Baptista Stockler Pimentel in 1930, Juquinha passed away yesterday in his native city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One of the first bossa nova drummers, he performed in such legendary albums as "Canção do Amor Demais" (Elizeth Cardoso) and "Chega de Saudade", the debut solo LP of João Gilberto, on which he played alongside three other great percussionists: Milton Banana, Rubens Bassini and Guarany. Both were recorded in 1958.

Juquinha was also the drummer in the original soundtracks of both the "Orfeu da Conceição" stage play and the "Orfeu do Carnaval" (Black Orpheus) movie, as well as in all tracks of Eumir Deodato's debut album as a leader, "Inútil Paisagem," produced by Roberto Quartin in 1964 for Wadi Gebara's Forma label. Arnaldo DeSouteiro produced the first authorized CD reissue of "Inútil Paisagem," digitally remastered in 1998 from the original two-track master tapes and released on DeSouteiro's JSR label, being distributed all over the world by Universal. "Juquinha played brushes in a phone book looking for a very soft sound," explains Deodato.
He also recorded with Antonio Carlos Jobim (with whom he co-wrote the song "Faz Uma Semana," originally recorded by Ernani Filho in 1953 on the Sinter label), Waldir Azevedo (the famous original version of "Brasileirinho"), Roberto Menescal ("as the uncredited drummer of several tracks from Menescal's first album for Elenco," states his protégé João Palma, the official member of Menescal's first group at that time), Lucio Alves (on the "Balançamba" album, actually a Menescal Songbook), Sylvia Telles, Billy Blanco, Luiz Bonfá, Carlos Lyra, Dalva de Oliveira, Dorival Caymmi, Marcos Valle (on his debut LP, "Samba Demais"), Dóris Monteiro, Cartola, Claudette Soares, Agnaldo Timóteo, Elis Regina, Beth Carvalho, Elza Soares, Paulinho da Viola (in many albums for the Odeon label during the 70s), Clara Nunes and Martinho da Vila, besides his work as a member of the orchestras led by Roberto Inglez and Noro Morales. Juquinha performed with several foreign artists who toured Brazil during the 50s, 60s and 70s: Nat King Cole, Roy Hamilton, Billy Eckstine, Teddy Randazo, Paul Anka, Lucho Gatica, Sarita Montiel, Armando Manzanero and Gregorio Barrios, amongst others.

R.I.P.: Yvonne King

Yvonne King Burch Dies at 89; Member of King Sisters
by Valerie J. Nelson
Los Angeles Times, December 17, 2009

Yvonne King Burch, one of the singing King Sisters, an accomplished swing-era vocal group that later starred with their extended family in a television variety show, has died. She was 89.

Burch, who was injured in a fall, died Sunday at a hospital in Santa Barbara, her family announced.

Born Jan. 20, 1920, in Ephraim, Utah, she was the sixth of eight children of William King Driggs, a vocal trainer, and his wife, Pearl.

Her father was an old-time vaudevillian who trained his children to sing. Billed as the Driggs Family of Entertainers, they toured the West, eventually settling in Oakland.

When her three oldest sisters -- Maxine, Luise and Alyce -- formed their own vocal group in junior high, they billed themselves as the King Sisters. The trio became a quartet when Yvonne, then 14, joined with another sister, Donna, after Maxine left to get married.

With another sister and a friend in the lineup, they became known as the Six King Sisters. They first attracted attention in 1935 by performing with Horace Heidt's band and appearing on his radio show.

Heidt shrank the group to four when he took them on tour. Once again, they were truly a sister singing act, known for tight, four-part harmony, with Yvonne or Alyce taking the occasional solo.

When guitarist Alvino Rey -- who by then had married Luise -- left Heidt in 1939 to form his own band, the sisters went with him. Yvonne sang on several Rey hits, including the band's theme song, "Nighty Night," and "I Said No."

The King Sisters also scored a series of moderate hits issued under their own name, among them "The Hut Sut Song," "I'll Get By" and "In the Mood."

At the height of their musical success, they appeared in several movies in the 1940s, including "Sing Your Worries Away" with Buddy Ebsen, "Meet the People" with Lucille Ball and Dick Powell, and "Cuban Pete" with Desi Arnaz.

Upon entering the Navy, Rey broke up his band in 1943 and the sisters started fading from the spotlight. When Donna left the group in the late 1940s, the youngest sister, Marilyn, stepped in.

In 1963, Yvonne organized a charity performance that featured members of the King family and led to their own weekly ABC program, "The King Family Show," in 1965.

The program was an immediate hit, according to the All Music Internet database, but success was bittersweet: Family patriarch Driggs, a featured performer, died weeks into the show's run.

With as many as 40 family members involved -- Rey had a regular spot with his talking guitar -- the wholesome program aired for a year. It was briefly revived in 1969.

The King Sisters continued to perform into the 1980s and sang at Ronald Reagan's presidential inaugural gala in 1985.

With her first husband, musician Buddy Cole, Yvonne had two daughters, Tina Cole, who played the wife of the character played by Don Grady in the TV show "My Three Sons"; and Cathy Green.

Twice divorced, Yvonne also had been married to bandleader Del Courtney.

In 1966, she married William Burch, an early TV writer-director-producer. He died in 2005 at 86.

In addition to her daughters, Burch is survived by sister Marilyn; stepchildren Cilla Reid and Charles Burch; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services are pending.
