PERFORMING MUSIC FROM HIS CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED RECORDING
TURN UP THE HEATH

20 WEEKS ON THE JAZZWEEK CHARTS

"...in his composing-arranging as well as in his playing, Jimmy has indeed embodied jazz's rainbow of sounds and stories."
Nat Hentoff - JazzTimes

4 stars DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE
"...Two A list units swing ebulliently through soulful, meticulous charts..."
TED PANKEN

"When Jimmy Heath recorded his first album as a big-band leader in 1992, after nearly half a century as a working musician, who could have dreamed that he'd come back fourteen years later with a sequel that handily blows that first enterprise out of the water...The band is world-class, as are Heath's irrepressible charts. Don't pass this one up.
JACK BOWERS, Cadence

"This is an outstanding disc and easily one of the best albums released at the end of 2006."
KEN DRYDEN - All About Jazz New York

“One of the best composers and arrangers to emerge
during the bop era… Jimmy Heath's Turn Up the Heath
will be paying dividends to jazz fans for generations.”
KEN DRYDEN – ALL MUSIC GUIDE

"...Heath packs his arrangements with incident, deft voicings and exhilarating counterpoint. He has a story to tell and he tells it well..."
Ray Comiskey, Irish Times - 5 stars

"Big band albums by Jimmy Heath are rare.
In his 60-year career, there have been only three or four.
"Turn Up the Heath", recorded at sessions in 2004 and this year,
is his masterpiece as an arranger".
Owen Cordle, The News & Observer

"...this CD has a wealth of in-the-moment magic, muscular swing, and orchestral grace and power."
4 stars JOSEPH BLAKE/Times Colonist

Wish I could be there, but I'm on the other side of the globe. Anyway, I take this opportunity to recommend the haunting documentary "Brotherly Jazz - The Heath Brothers". Directed byJesse Block, produced by Danny Scher for DanSun Prod., it's one of the best DVDs of the year. Konnichi wa!

Dizzy Gillespie's 90th Birthday Celebration with Mike Longo, Annie Ross & Jimmy Owens

Join us at Jazz Tuesdays tonight, October 23, for a very exciting evening to celebrate Dizzy Gillespie's 90th birthday with Mike Longo's swinging 18-piece Big Band, "NY State of the Art Jazz Ensemble" with Jazz Legend Annie Ross, Trumpet Great Jimmy Owens, hot young vocalist Hilary Gardner, PLUS a film showing of some of Dizzy's live performances.

TONIGHT ONLY THERE WILL BE ONE SHOW AT 8:00 P.M.

Pianist/composer/arranger Mike Longo, who has earned many accolades as a jazz pianist, formed the New York State of the Art Jazz Ensemble in 1999 to play the Jersey Jazz Festival when they wanted to feature him in a setting of composer/arranger. The program was received so enthusiastically that Mike was prompted by jazz fans and the members of the band to keep it going. As a result, he began composing new material and arranging it for the band, which was booked back each year at the Jersey Festival, followed by several appearances at New York City's famed Birdland jazz club. Their latest CD, “Oasis”, released last winter climbed to #7 and remained on the charts for an unprecedented 20 weeks.

Jazz singer and actress Annie Ross moved with her aunt, singer Ella Logan, to Los Angeles at the age of three, where she became a juvenile film actress, starting on the "Our Gang" series at five. As a teenager, she moved to New York to study acting, then back to England, where she became a nightclub and band singer. She returned to the U.S. and gained attention in 1952 for her song "Twisted," a "vocalese" setting of humorous lyrics to what had been a saxophone solo by Wardell Gray. (More than 20 years later, Joni Mitchell made a popular recording of the song.) In 1958, Ross teamed with Dave Lambert and Jon Hendricks in the vocalese trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, and they toured and recorded successfully, their best-known album being their first, "Sing a Song of Basie." Ross left the trio in 1962 and settled in England, continuing to sing and work as an actress. She returned again to the U.S. in 1985. In 1993, she had a featured role in the Robert Altman film "Short Cuts."

Trumpeter Jimmy Owens, a fine hard bop soloist, started on the trumpet when he was ten and later studied with Donald Byrd. Owens has played as a sideman with many major players, including Lionel Hampton, Hank Crawford, Charles Mingus, Herbie Mann, Duke Ellington, Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, and the Dizzy Gillespie Reunion Band. He was one of the founders of the Collective Black Artists and
closely involved with the Jazzmobile in New York.

Admission is 15.00, $10.00 for students.
Tickets will be sold at the door, or call 212-222-5159 for reservations and information.

R.I.P.: Teresa Brewer

The singer Teresa Brewer died October 17th at her home in New Rochelle, New York, at the age of 76 from a neuromuscular disease. In her youth Brewer won several talent shows and made a name for herself singing mostly blues, ballads and dixieland. In the 50s she also incorporated rhythm 'n' blues and country songs into her repertoire and succeeded in landing several hits on the hit parades. In the 60s she spent most of her time at home raising her four daughters. In 1972 she married her second husband, the producer Bob Thiele who spotlighted her more as a jazz singer and produced albums coupling her with Count Basie and Duke Ellington. In 1991 she recorded an album in tribute of Louis Armstrong on which she was joined by Wynton Marsalis and Dizzy Gillespie. Today, "Patois Records" Release Party

While I'm busy here in Europe with the release parties of my recent Verve compilations, something that has forced me to not post often in the past few days, this Sunday I would love to be in California for the "Patois Records Release Party", which will feature latin jazz singer-songwriter Alexa Weber Morales.

The event celebrates the launch of Patois Records, founded by three-time Grammy nominee Wayne Wallace. "The Doctor, as he's known, is the arranger and producer behind my two CDs and the two by singer Kat Parra, as well as four of his own and countless others," says Alexa, who will be performing today, October 21 at 7 pm, along with Wayne and Kat at the Little Fox Theater, an architectural gem located in Redwood City. Now, some of you have said you'd like to come but don't know where Redwood City is. It's on the Peninsula, on 101 between the San Mateo and Dumbarton bridges.

To be more specific:
2215 Broadway St
Redwood City, CA 94063

Mel Martin reverencia Benny Carter

E, desde então, volta e meia tocaram juntos.

Martin tinha 54.

Belos momentos

No vocal, Jackie Ryan.

Benny Carter Centennial Tribute Band

New York City, Monday Oct. 15

Helping to kick off Jazz at Lincoln Center's 2007-08 season and Benny Carter Centennial celebrations, Bay Area saxophonist Mel Martin brings an all-star Carter tribute band into Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola tomorrow, October 15. Carter videos, photos, and album artwork will be on display in the Atrium October 19 and 20.

Martin's performance at Dizzy's is the culmination of his personal observance of the centennial of his late friend and mentor, Benny Carter, which began with the July 2007 release of Just Friends (Jazzed Media), a new live CD by the quintet he co-led with Carter in the 1990s. Since the summer, Martin and the Carter tribute band have appeared in an extensive series of club and concert bookings on both coasts -- including an August Hollywood Bowl tribute to Carter on his actual 100th birthday -- highlighting material from the new album and from the Benny Carter songbook.

The Mel Martin band's first set on October 15 at 7:30 pm is sold out, but tickets remain for the 9:30 show ($20, 212-258-9595). The music will be recorded for broadcast on XM Satellite Radio.

As baladas são um show à parte, especialmente “My ship”, disparado o ponto alto do disco.

Quer dizer, quase tudo.

************
Eyedentity are here. Not so much a group as an ever-changing collective consciousness, comprising the talents of 'coming and going' featured artists. In short, an ever-evolving entity, the central nerve centre being The Factor (son of Jazz bassist Walter Booker and the nephew of Jazz saxophonist, Wayne Shorter) and dB (daughter of vocalist Flora Purim and percussionist Airto Moreira). The combined talent of these artists produced this excellent debut album released in May 2000. Taking trip-hop into unchartered territory 'See' combines a variety of musical flavours and multicultural influences to yield something a little more hop than trip, infusing the genre with a new perspective. Dissolving categorical boundaries and pushing ahead of populist trends Eyedentity are eclectic, infinitely inventive, and with another album in the pipeline definitely one to watch.

Eyedentity is the brainchild of Diana Moreira Booker, aka dB (Decibel) and her husband Krishna Booker. Born in the summer of '97 this musical life form has developed combining powerful vocals with innovative and experimental beats, bound together by the couple's musical ingenuity and programming expertise. A true creative collective, Eyedentity changes shape and form with the coming and going of the various featured artists. It's evolution however is dependent on the constancy of both Diana and Krishna who form the band's nucleus. Krishna Booker is the son of Jazz bassist Walter Booker and the nephew of Wayne Shorter. His musical partner and beloved is his wife Diana, daughter of vocalist extraordinaire Flora Purim, and world famous percussionist Airto Moreira. Both were born in NYC and had an intensely musical and gypsy-like upbringing travelling with their families. Their parents met and became firm friends when Airto and Flora moved to the States to pursue their musical careers. This resulted in the children becoming childhood playmates.

However due to travelling and moving to the West Coast their time spent together became fewer and farther between as they grew up, and it wasn't until 1992 that they met again becoming instantly attracted to each other as adults. Krishna Booker's musical career took off at the young age of thirteen. He had begun to show such considerable talent and musical potential that Herbie Hancock and Wah Wah Watson (friends of the family), along with his uncle began supplying him with studio equipment to see what he could do. Already an accomplished rapper - "Human Beatbox", he started making beats for himself and his partner Scott Febles (The DREAM), and they soon began performing at parties, benefits and events such as "the Taste of L.A." and "the Garlic Festival".

In 1993 they took part in a West Coast project entitled COLLECTIVE THOUGHTS which sold locally and in Atlanta. Krishna’s emcee talent along with his musical talents on keyboards and percussion as well as engineering and production expertise became widely recognized. D. Booker aka Decibel began her musical career in the belly of her mother, touring the world with Chick Corea's Original Return to Forever. Growing up on the road it wasn't long before she was dancing, singing background vocals, and playing percussion with her parents' group. At the age of 14 she started songwriting, with some of her compositions ending up in her parents' repertoire. As she matured she took her ability and experience and ventured out alone writing and singing her own material – stepping on to the hip hop scene of LA. At the age of 19 she fell in love with Krishna Booker, meeting at one of her parents Fourth World shows in which she was singing backing vocals. Before long the two realised their professional musical compatibility and in 1993 they moved in together forming a powerhouse writing and production team that the Los Angeles scene wasn't quite ready for at the time. Through their ongoing work with Flora and Airto, MELT label owner Robert Trunz noticed their unique versatility and potential. After utilising them on a few smaller projects, he requested that the duo create a project geared more towards the underground Trip Hop/Drum ‘n’ Bass scenes.

Recruiting the help of long time friends The DREAM, and producer, Rashid Duke, son of pianist/producer, George Duke, the combination of their different flavours yielded something a little more 'hop than trip', infusing the scene with a new perspective. This resulted in their debut album See released on MELT internationally in May 2000. See incorporates sounds from around the world, pulled together by hip hop, trip hop and acid jazz beats. The lyrics deal with both the physical and metaphysical elements of the human condition, touching upon many aspects of life such as inner dignity and modern day spirituality.

Their second album is called Perfect My Craft. In their own words, “this is a challenge of self discovery for the hard core Hip Hop head and acomforting, inspiring journey for the open minded listener.” Fusing the elements of Hip Hop, Trip Hop, Funk, Afro-Brazilian, classic & Latin Jazz, the project's subject matter varies from the classic underground "verbal battle" to empathic odes of frustration and sadness glazed with the salvation of improving ones outer existence by working on the innerself. Avoiding musical cliches and categorisation this inventive music is deep and provocative and aimed at the thinking listener.

Alongside their work as Eyedentity Krishna and D have also produced tracks for local upcoming underground West Coast hip hop artists such As Hazsmat, Da Devious One, Subdivision and Medusa. Factor, Eternal Ra One an DJ Cass have collaborated on a track for the up and coming Underground female freestyle sensation Da Devious One called Verbal Essentials. The two also often collaborate with Wah Wah Watson on several projects for His website. As partners Rashid,Krishna and D are always producing for each other’s solo projects. On the MELT label they have assisted with programming and sequencing as well as playing on a number of Airto and Flora's projects including Fourth World. They have co-composed tracks for Airto’s solo album Homeless, for Flora’s album Speed of Light as well as contributing to her album called "Flora sings Milton Nascimiento", D also provided the vocals whilst Krishna rapped on Jose Neto’s spectacular album Neto.

They are touring the EYEDENTITY project live with Andre De Sntanna on bass, Sandro Rebel on Keys, Grecco Buratto on guitar, Sandro Feliciano on drums, Marcos "Gibi" Dos Santos on percussion and Chris "Bob NeckSnapp" Gamez on turntables. Eyedentity brought down the house with Airto Moreira and Wah Wah Watson on stage as their guests, proving that their live performances are every bit as polished and spectacular as their recordings For more information regarding releases, touring, compositions, production, remixes, etc, contact them at Management info for Eyedentity Osiris Munir President/Ankh Entertainment One/Big Daddy Management 9663 Santa Monica Blvd. #151 Beverly Hills, California 90210

Amanda Carr live, tonight and on October 21st

Here are the the details about the two forthcoming gigs by jazz singer Amanda Carr, whom critic Ken Dryden defined as "gifted with a pleasant voice, terrific diction and the ability to pick a wide-ranging program that neither skews to overly familiar standards or a heavy dose of originals".

In the repertoire, some songs from her latest CD, "Soon". Such gems as "Flamingo" (my favorite instrumental version is the one by Lalo Schifrin on his "Black Widow" album), "Squeeze Me" (that Paul Desmond recorded magnificently on "Pure Desmond"), Tadd Dameron's superb "If You Could See Me Now), and even two Brazilian standards: "If You Never Come To Me" (Ray Gilbert's English lyrics to the Jobim bossa-ballad "Inutil Paisagem", aka "Useless Landscape" as recorded by Sinatra) and Jorge Ben's "Mas Que Nada".

R.I.P.: Paulo Autran

Brazil's greatest actor ever, Paulo Autran passed away in São Paulo, yesterday, October 12, 2006 at age 85. His jazz connection? Well, his jazz-lover friend Simon Khoury, who introduce Autran to the recordings of Billy May, Mancini, Legrand and countless others music giants.
My connection with Paulo Autran also happened through the celebrated writer, radio DJ (during the heyday of "Jornal do Brasil AM" in the early 70s) and musical producer Simon Khoury, one of Autran's closest friends.
Back in 1979, Khoury produced a Paulo Autran album, released on Top Tape's subsidiary label Aquarela. It's a haunting album of poetry, but not only limited to it, since Autran also performs excerpts from Shakespeare's "Julius Ceasar". Always very astute, Khoury invited such musicians as my dear friend João Palma (yes, the internationally acclaimed drummer who worked with Jobim, Sinatra, Sergio Mendes, Paul Desmond etc) and pianist/arranger Antonio Adolfo to the sessions. Adolfo added music to Casimiro de Abreu's "A Valsa" and Sergio Porto's "Divisão".
Durval Ferreira, then the A&R man at Top Tape, also took part in the proceedings, playing acoustic guitar and writing the background music to Vinicius de Moraes' "Poema Enjoadinho".
At the time of the album release, Miriam Rezende, Top Tape's publicity director at that time, invited me to prepare a press-release, since the excellent liner notes written by Khoury were too poetic, with many personal references. And the label needed to add a more biographical text to the press kit. So, in September 1979, Arnaldo DeSouteiro wrote his first press-release ever, later praised by Autran himself when we met at Khoury's home in Cosme Velho.
Curiously, the album, never reissued on CD yet, has 3 titles: "Paulo Autran - Melhores Momentos" (in the front cover), "Os Melhores Momentos de Paulo Autran" (in the back cover) and "Momentos de Paulo Autran" (on the label). Anyway, it's magical. We'll all miss you, Paulo!

Btw, Yoshi's opened an even larger branch in San Francisco's Fillmore quarter, as Jesse Hamlin reports (
San Francisco Chronicle ). The nightclub seats 420 and a Japanese restaurant another 370 customers. Roy Haynes, Gary Burton, Kenny Garrett and Ravi Coltrane will play the first jazz notes at the club's opening in late November. San Franciscan's don't necessarily like crossing the bridge to come to Oakland, thus the owners hope for a large audience in the city, says Kaz Kajimura who founded Yoshi's about 30 years ago together with his wife Yoshi Akiba. The acoustics have been important in the planning of the club, and there are no places with bad views. Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Charlie Hunter and Gonzalo Rubalcaba have already been booked for next year.
