Jack Jeffers' Big Band tonight, August 21, at NY Baha'i Center

Join us for another spectacular evening of swinging jazz you’ll never forget this Tuesday evening, August 21 at the John Birks Gillespie Auditorium in the New York City Baha'i Center at 53 East 11th Street (between University Place & Broadway) when Jack Jeffers and his 16-piece Big Band The New York Classics return to the stage. Dedicated to the late great Dizzy Gillespie, this magnificent, yet cozy theater with its glorious acoustics is fast becoming the favorite venue of the world class musicians who play there, as well as jazz fans who return week after week to enjoy this comfortable and exhilarating experience, soaking up great sounds in the warm and welcoming environment of this beautiful theater. There are 2 shows: 8:00 and 9:30 p.m.

You will be uplifted by the great sound of trombonist Jack Jeffers' 16-piece Big Band "The New York Classics". Jack Jeffers has played with the bands of Count Basie, Maynard Ferguson, Ray Charles, Clark Terry, and Mercer Ellington, among many others. He has written music for a diverse range of organizations and performers, including The Boy’s Choir of Harlem and The Black Music Repertory Ensemble. His own big band, The New York Classics, performs a number of his compositions, which are featured on the band’s CD New York Dances, on the Mapleshade label.

He recently completed a commission from the Boy’s Choir of Harlem of a work to be premiered in Texas later this year. Most recently, Jack has served as musical director/conductor for the Broadway Cares-Equity Fights AIDS benefit, “Broadway Salutes the Spirit of Harlem” at the Apollo Theater. His other musical director/conductor credits include two contemporary operas: “Long Tongues” by Julius Hemphill and “The E & O Line” by Anne LeBaron, and two Broadway shows: The Wiz” and “The Boy’s Choir of Harlem on Broadway”. Jack has also played in the pit orchestras of more than twenty Broadway musicals. Jack is currently the co-director and arranger of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, in addition to being a member of Chico O’Farill’s Afro Cuban Jazz Band.
